Business Continuity Plan: 7 steps to develop your BCP
Business Continuity Plan: 7 steps to develop your BCP
A Business Continuity Plan (BCP) is a document that sets out the procedures and strategies an organization must follow to ensure that its critical operations and services can continue or recover in the event of major disruptions, such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks or any other emergency situation.
If a business is paralyzed, it stops producing and therefore its economic capacity would be affected.
The main objectives of a BCP are as follows:
-Minimizing downtime
-Economic and reputational protection
-Compliance with legal and contractual obligations with customers.
-Convey peace of mind to employees and customers.
7 steps to develop a BCP
A BCP is a vital tool to help an organization prepare for emergency situations and ensure that its critical operations can continue effectively and efficiently.
The main parts of a business continuity plan are described below:
Business Impact Analysis (BIA)
The BIA identifies the critical business processes, systems, equipment and resources necessary for the business to function, as well as recovery time objectives.
The financial and operational impact of an interruption in these processes and systems is also evaluated.
Risk assessment
The risk assessment identifies what effects a business interruption would have and establishes control measures to minimize or mitigate these risks.
Recovery strategies
This section describes the specific strategies to be used to recover and restore critical systems and business processes, including contingency plans and recovery measures.
This is a critical process that identifies critical business processes and systems, and assesses the financial and operational impact of a disruption to these processes and systems.
Emergency response organization and management
This section establishes the emergency response management structure and the specific responsibilities of each team member. It also identifies the necessary communication procedures, training and equipment.
Business continuity plans
Business continuity plans detail how the continuity of critical processes and systems will be ensured in the event of major disruptions. These plans include data backup and recovery procedures, contingency plans for systems and processes, and notification and communication procedures.
Testing and maintenance
