DEEPFAKE – cyber attack alert
Deepfake – cyber attack alert
Cybercrime has no limits and in our informative and advisory work, we will talk about a well-known phenomenon already used for fraudulent activities. We are talking about Deepfake.
Deepfake consists of manipulating the images and voice of a person to deceive the recipients of these videos or audios with false messages. To do this, programs with artificial intelligence technology are used that allow the exchange of faces and voice modifications. These programs can be easily downloaded by anyone.
In short, people are impersonated by making statements or performing acts that they have never performed.
If a company is the victim of a Deepfake, the following could happen to it:
Example 1:
The administration staff of a company receives a phone call with the voice of the manager, authorizing a bank transfer, or the shipment of products or the performance of free work.
Example 2:
A video has been posted on social networks with compromising images of the manager or executives to discredit their image or that of their company and cause a loss of customers.
The news spread like wildfire through the networks and unfortunately, the presumption of innocence today is conspicuous by its absence.
The big problem of all this is not the ease with which these programs can be accessed, but the use for crime with which cybercriminals use any means that falls into their hands and as we have seen in the examples, causing problems in terms of credibility or reputation of a person.
We are facing a new scenario, which we must quickly take on board in order to contain it as far as possible. We must also demand that the authorities act effectively in the face of widespread cybercrime.
Being prepared for a Deepfake is the only solution
No one is exempt from suffering a Deepfake, therefore, what we can do is to be prepared in case this happens and INCIBE recommends the following actions:
- Monitor social networks: keep track of corporate and personal social networks and hashtags or locations.
- Establish a crisis plan: if it happens, be prepared with a plan to stop it in time and forcefully.
- Train personnel to detect impersonation: mainly personnel related to payments or management of key services for the company.
- Take precautions when using videoconferencing.
- Update payment procedures: for example, all payments should be authorized by email or in person, but never by telephone, and if they are larger payments, they should be authorized by more than one person.
- Take out insurance: verifying that you are covered for deepfake-based fraud.
If your company is a victim of a deepfakethis is what you should do:
- Ask the uploading account to delete it.
- Report what happened to the State Security Forces and Corps.
- Notify the incident to INCIBE-CERT or if you need information about cyber-attacks , please contact Your INCIBE Cybersecurity Helpdesk.
